Enhancing climate resilience of Gorakhpur city by buffering floods through climate resilient peri-urban agriculture

Duration: 2011 – 2015

Location: Eight villages of peri-urban areas of Gorakhpur city

Supported By: The Rockefeller Foundation

Description:

This project focuses on demonstrating the importance of ecosystem services such as flood buffering for addressing climate change impacts in Gorakhpur city. The key strategies being implemented under this project are:

  • Developing models of climate resilient integrated agriculture-horticulture-aquaculture-livestock systems in small marginal land holdings in the peri-urban context employing a diversity of water system

  • Enhancing the income and food security of the poor and vulnerable population

  • Ensuring the sustainability of peri-urban agriculture lands through diverse regularity and incentive mechanisms
  • Enhancing the flood buffering capacity of the city as it expands through institutionalisation and replication of sustainable management of agricultural ecosystem.
