Integration of Climate Change in Disaster Risk Reduction Initiatives in Bihar with Focus on Children
Climate change and climatic variability have impacted and will continue to impact all sectors, from national and economic security to human health, food production, infrastructure, water availability and ecosystems. Climate-induced disasters have the most adverse effects on children and women. With this backdrop, UNICEF, Bihar supported GEAG in enhancing the capacity of partner organizations of UNICEF in the integration of Climate Change in Disaster Risk Resilience (DRR) initiatives of Bihar with a focus on children.
The key objective of this project was to support six UNICEF partners on the integration of climate change aspects in the ongoing Climate Based DRR and School Safety initiatives in six districts of Bihar. It also provided handholding support to districts in District Disaster Management Programme (DDMP) rollout and producing innovative and supportive knowledge materials on climate change.
“Training of Trainers” on DRR was conducted for 30 Trainers. 120 DRR Catalysts and 40 children were trained to emerge as “Climate Change Champions”. Guidance Briefs, Articles, Blogs, Policy Briefs, Process Manual and Monitoring Indicators were developed with a special focus on the implementation of DDMP while addressing the vulnerabilities of children.
Training Manuals have also been developed for CCA integration in CBDRR and School Safety Programme. Besides, a review report of school curriculum of grades 6-8 of Bihar was prepared through a climate change lens and recommendations were provided to incorporate information pertaining to climate change in the school education to make the children aware about climate change.
