“Commemoration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi”

Date: 2 October 2018

Brief: On commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, (2nd October, 2018), Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group (GEAG) organised an awareness and cleanliness programme under the aegis of Core Support Programme, Department of Science &Technology (DST), Government of India, New Delhi. This day-long programme in Pachgawan Village (selected under the DST Core Support Programme) of Jangle Kaudia Block of Gorakhpur District was centred on WASH and Cleanliness issues. The aim of the programme was to create cleanliness and hygiene-related awareness among the community. Around 90 households (men and women both) of the village actively participated in this awareness cum cleanliness drive. They voluntarily cleaned a 100-meter-long drain, passing through the village which usually remains choked with plastic and soil.

The members of the Village Panchayat Samitee and members of SHGs also actively participated in this awareness and cleanliness drive. All the members of the SHGs unanimously decided that these kinds of awareness programmes and cleanliness drives should be organised regularly in the village for the adoption of good practices, a behaviour change in the community on the aspects of WASH and Cleanliness while creating long-term sustainable results.
