About Us

A little more about us

We have come a long way!

What started in 1975 as an attempt to preserve local environment and conserve natural resources, has blossomed into a full fledged organisation that works on diverse issues of sustainable agriculture, sustainable livelihood models, adaptation to climate change, gender equity and rights of small and marginal farmers.

Our journey began in 1975, in a small, non-descript laboratory in the Botany department of Uttar Pradesh Gorakhpur University. Here, a motivated group of students, researchers and faculty of the University began talking ‘environment’. Deeply influenced by the Chipko Movement at home and the Stockholm Conference of 1972, they decided to group their resources in a bid to preserve the local environment and conserve natural resources. And that’s how the idea that is GEAG was conceived!

Soon, we were in the thick of local awareness and environmental education campaigns; we stood in solidarity with various contemporary national and international environmental movements; and gradually widened our ideological horizons.

Then in 1983, our informal organization registered as a non-profit organization under the Society's Registration Act, 1960. Since then GEAG has emerged as a well established implementing, resource, consultative and support organization in northern India on sustainable agriculture, sustainable livelihood models, climate change adaptation, gender equity and rights of small and marginal farmers across the state.
