Urban climate change resilience

Human-induced climate change, in concurrence with environmental degradation is making the cities vulnerable. UN-Habitat estimates that 70% of the world’s population will live in urban areas by 2050, and approximately 60% of the growth is expected to take place in Asia. Climate change will lead to warmer temperatures, greater variability in local conditions, and changes in the frequency and intensity of rainfall. Secondary cities are witnessing rapid growth but lack the capacities to address the compounding challenges of climate change, urbanisation, poverty and environmental degradation.

GEAG has been responding to these challenges through various initiatives. Since 2010 GEAG is part of the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) and has been supporting the city of Gorakhpur in building flexible and dynamic systems and institutions that identify and respond to the challenges that climate change poses to urban areas.
